Run coaching by Alys
Up And Running
Customized training for all levels
I offer friendly, non-intimidating one-on-one or small group run coaching. Whether you're a complete beginner wanting to get started, a casual jogger with hopes of running your first half marathon, or an intermediate athlete looking to get faster or increase distance, I can meet you at your level of experience to build a training program together and meet your goals. I coach runners locally in the Chico, California area, as well as virtually through use of a training app, phone communication, and video.
I first took up running at age 10 when my 5th grade teacher dared that I wouldn’t have to begin schoolwork until after I finished jogging, so I took that challenge quite seriously, jogging for nearly an hour before my teacher gave up and called me inside. I ran the mile for track in high school, but it wasn’t until 2007 when I decided to try my first half marathon that I really came into my own and found my love of distance running.
In 2012-2015 I encountered serious struggles with mental health. Anxiety and depression that had plagued me most of my life came to a head, landing me in the hospital with kidney failure as the result of substance abuse. I now believe that overcoming these struggles made me stronger and enabled me to be of service to others and relate to their experiences. I take each day with gratitude and humor, considering running & fitness to be a huge part of my continued recovery and happiness.
I run a variety of races throughout the year – from 5ks to my favorite distance, the half marathon – and recently ran my third sub-4-hour full marathon. In addition to racing, I also run as a pacer for Beast Pacing and Tri-Valley Run Club. I live in northern California with my partner Gary and am studying to become a Physician Assistant. I am First Aid certified, CPR certified, and a nationally registered EMT.
